FIRE TESTS ON BASALT CHOPPED STRANDS BOARDS

Several tests were carried on different boards with chopped basalt fibers:

TEST 1:  BCS-13-06-KV07 33%; BCS-13-12-KV07 33%; BCS-13-24-KV07 33%
TEST 2:  BCS-13-06-KV07 100%

Panels are realized with a fiber-cement matrix and Kamenny Vek chopped fibers: inorganic matrix is a commercial Portland cement, cellulose fibers and
Poly-Vinyl-Alcohol mixture. About 200 g of different lengths chopped fibers are
dispersed in about 12 kg of cement mixture-water suspension: the resulting final specimen weighs about 400 g. In the next figure, dimensions of the specimen are reported:

Test Example
All tests were carried with a non-premixed hydrogen flame, 2750 Nl/h hydrogen gas flow rate. As in our previous tests, burner was positioned 12 cm above the impinged surface.

RESULTS
These special basalt reinforced boards didn’t break under the jet fire action and had a fine resistance to the jet impingement. A normal fiber-cement board without the dispersed chopped basalt fiber only resisted for few minutes under the same fire conditions. Our tests demonstrate the possibility of use this kind of materials in Passive Fire Protection applications.
